Its historic old town perched on the hill, with its Valencian ceramic blue-domed church presiding over the skyline, takes on an entirely different dimension when you see it from the sea. Anchoring the Goleta Josephine off the village, with the bell tower and whitewashed houses reflected in the late-afternoon water, is one of those unplanned moments that passengers remember months later.
But Altea is not just its old town. Morro de Toix — the dramatic headland that closes the Altea bay to the north — defines a landscape of vertical cliffs contrasting with the emerald waters at their base. In the cliff face, several sea caves and sheltered inlets only accessible by boat hold some of the best snorkelling seabeds on the entire coast: grottoes with red porgy, moray eels and starfish on rocky bottoms covered in red algae. South of Morro de Toix, Cap Negret marks the beginning of a succession of small coves that are hard to reach by land.
From the deck of the Josephine, on the clearest days, you can see the Benidorm skyline to the south and the Peñón de Ifach to the north simultaneously — two contrasting icons that frame the most complex and most beautiful stretch of the Costa Blanca. The Altea bay is well sheltered from northerly winds thanks to Morro de Toix, making it a comfortable sailing area even when there is some wind elsewhere along the coast.
A full day from Altea allows you to combine a morning visit to Morro de Toix — with the caves and an anchor at Cala de la Mina — with a stop off the old town in the late afternoon, making the most of the golden light that makes the village look its absolute best for photographs.

Skipper Alberto adapts the route to sea conditions, but the trip usually takes in Morro de Toix, Cap Negret and coves that are hard to reach by land between Altea and Calpe. A sunset from the deck off Altea is one of the most valued moments of the charter.
